Enthusiastic pursuit of art and science in Ch'ien lung (乾隆) period of Ch'ing Dynasty was continued into China ch'ing (嘉慶) and Tao kuang (道光) periods. But these periods saw cconomic crisis which increased in intensity year after year. There was this economic crisis at the bottom of the Opium War, and the problem of silver price was of special importance. As the studies prosecuted earnestly in those days were directed on to Chinese classics, students were hardly able to say anything about economic problems. But necessity of the age urged some public-spirited intellectuals to begin scientific studies anew which would deal with economic matters. They looked up to Ku Yen-wu (顧炎武) as their teacher and made an intensive study of his Science of Statecraft (経世之学). They were most interested in the problem of silver price, and in order to consider how to meet the situation they first began with the study of the history of silver currency in China. This article makes comment on some of the arguments about the history of silver currency in China produced by those students of statecraft, and investigates the relation of the line of their thought to that of Yen-wu's.
