Family status in the rural community can be divided into two types. One implies a relation between influential and subordinate families like the relation between lords and retainers. In this case, there are considerable number of villagers outside such a relation. The other means the grouping and ranking of families among villagers. Every villager belonged to a certain rank, and families of a particular rank formed a superior group in the village life. Though the feudal lord did not treat them differently, they Constituted a dominant class in the rural community. The purpose of this paper is to examine the latter type of family status in Omi, and describe its decline in the second half of the Tokugawa era.
