We study soft modes near the critical end point in the chiral quark model. At this point the order parameter becomes a linear combination of the scalar condensate and the conserved densities, and all the susceptibilities diverge. Studying the spectral function and the poles of the scalar response function, we find that the particle-hole mode causes the critical divergence, which is consistent with the fact that the susceptibility of a conserved quantity contains the hydrodynamic spectrum alone.
