• A microscopic version of the excited-core model is presented on the basis of the concept that an odd-mass nucleus of mass number (A-1) might be described as a particle with respect to the even-even nucleus of mass number (A-2) and a hole with respect to the even-even nucleus of mass number A. It is shown that the equations would reduce to the equations of the single-particle shell model or to those of the quasi-particle model under the imposition of the appropriate approximations.
