The Schrodinger equation for an electron moving in the field of many potentials is expressed as a kind of difference equation in the approximation that the distances between the centers of adjacent potentials are much larger than the range of a potential. This procedure is exact when the range of the potential approaches zero. By solving the difference equation, we obtain an explicit formula for the energy spectrum, which contains a lattice sum of the kind treated first by Ewald. The merit of the present method lies in the fact that the potential part is separated from the lattice-structure part as far as possible, and the treatment of the electronic state in the array of many potentials is correspondingly simplified.
