These lectures discuss the expected quark-gluon plasma state of nuclear matter under extreme conditions of temperature or baryon density, the transition from hadronic to deconfined matter, and the possibility of studying the properties of nuclear matter at extremely high energy density in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions in the laboratory.
