The classical field-theoretic representation of the motion of a single electron in disordered materials has proved very fruitful. It makes available renormalization group and other powerful techniques and facilitates scaling arguments. The electron-phonon interaction is known to have a profound effect on the motion, introducing polaron effects even for a very small coupling. However, no systematic theory has been developed. In the present paper we introduce a classical field-theoretic representation in which disorder and the electron-phonon interaction are treated in comparable ways on an equal footing. The new formalism makes accessible all of the powerful techniques already used in the absence of the electron-phonon interaction and should stimulate rapid progress in the field.
