The measurements of the spin structure functions of the proton and neutron are described. The recent high precision data have allowed the Bjorken sum rule to be verified which is shown to provide an exacting test of QCD. The data show that there is a deficit between the proton spin and the total spin of the nucleon carried by quarks with 31±7 per cent of the spin of the proton accounted for by the spin of the quarks.
