• We present an up to date review of the structure and representations of the W_∞ algebra. The central charge is constrained by unitarity to take the values c=2p, with p=1, 2, 3,…. We also extend our discussion to W_∞^p, which is a U(p)-matrix generalization of W_∞, using the symmetries of the Grassmannian coset models SU(p+1)_N/SU(p)_N xotime U(1) in the large N limit.
