The two-dimensional gravity is believed to impose a severe constraint on the allowed central charge c of the coupled matter system or on the target space dimensions D_^^<1 in the context of non-critical string theory. Recently, there appeared several attempts to overcome this stricture. We here comment on some of these attempts, namely, the Weyl gauge fixing, R=-constant, and the ε-expansion scheme in d=2+ε. As for the Weyl gauge fixing, the BRST symmetric treatment is reviewed. In connection with the ε-expansion in d=2+ε, the membrane theory, which formally corresponds to ε=1, is discussed, and quite different constraints on the critical dimensions at d=2 and d=3 are noted.
