Detailed discussion is given about the applicability to heavy ion scatterin of the modified perturbed stationary state method (MPSSM) which has recently been proposed to include the effect of induced distortion of internal states during the collision of the two nuclei. The physical process underlying the formalism is interpreted as an induced rotation. Relationship between MPSSM and coupled channel method is discussed and it is shown that the approximate MPSS equation is useful in analysing heavy ion scattering.
