We show that in quasiperiodically forced systems, the maximum (nonzero) transient Lyapunov exponents of trajectories on strange attractors can fluctuate between positive and negative values. The most probable value of these exponents, which is positive for strange chaotic and negative for strange nonchaotic attractors, is equal to the time-independent Lyapunov exponent and characterizes the sensitive dependence on initial conditions.
