Perturbational theoretical approach to describe the filament formation of very intense laser beams in self-focusing media is reviewed. Linearized approximation is employed to describe results using both Sinusoidal as well as Gaussian perturbation models. A phenomenological energy depletion criterion is introduced in order to explain some main features concerning filament formation. The sinusoidal perturbation model is further extended to take into account all the nonlinear terms neglected in linearizing the model in order to explain the experimentally observed diameter of the filaments.
