The hole theory of liquids is developed into a simple model describing a melting transition. The free volume of a hard sphere is examined in high concentration region, without using the smearing approximation. The logarithm of the free volume exhibits the nonlinear dependence on the number of nearest-neighbour molecules, which has a form quite different from the result obtained by the smearing approximation. Taking this nonlinear dependence into account in the Bragg-Williams approximation, it is found that this theory predicts a melting transition. The resulting equation of state shows van der Waals-like curve and exhibits a first order phase transition. The number of holes increase rapidly in the transition region and the melting transition in this theory is interpreted as condensation of holes.
