Bondi, Pirani and Robinson have given an invariant definition of the plane gravitational waves, based on the symmetry properties of the plane electromagnetic waves; but this definition is applicable to empty regions only. The author has used the (z-t) property of the waves to extend the results of Bondi, Pirani and Robinson to the unified field of gravitation and electromagnetism. The exact plane wave solutions of the field equations in general relativity have been obtained in Bondi space time, the electromagnetic field considered being null in the sense of Synge.
