The adiabatic exponent Γ_1 for a gaseous material being in equilibrium with those particles such as iron nucleus, α, neutron, electron, positron and photon is studied in some detail. The present investigation shows Γ_1 becomes smaller than 4/3 over a rather wide range of dissociation rate of iron into helium. If only a few per mill of iron disintegrate into helium, then Γ_1<4/3 and the material would fall down into the state of hydrostatic instability. Our result suggests that the disintegration of iron can be regarded as the most promising mechanism which causes the sudden collapse of the core of massive stars.
