A mechanism is suggested for the anomalous deceleration of a charged particle passing through a disturbed plasma in which the velocity distribution function of electrons fluctuates around some smooth function. It is shown, by the use of the Nyquist diagram, that the effect of the fluctuations (many small humps) in the high energy tail of the velocity distribution function is to give rise to extra wave modes of acoustic type in the medium. The energy loss of a fast particle incident on the disturbed plasma can appreciably be increased due to the excitation of these extra modes in addition to the usual loss associated with the excitation of plasma waves.
