E1 Transition and Nuclear Deformation in the Excited States

The equilibrium deformation of some heavy nuclei in the excited states have been calculated in the individual particle model of Nilsson. It is found that the deformation remains practically unaltered. With use of Nilsson's eigenfunctions the electric dipole transition probabilities have also been calculated and it has been found that in most of the cases the retardation is maximum when the deformation of the excited state coincides with that of the ground state.
