The propagation character of light in moving medium is investigated by an application of the characteristic theory of hyperbolic partial differential equations with intimate connection with the theory of compressible fluid, and then, the Cerenkov radiation is treated theoretically as a special case when the velocity of medium exceeds the light velocity in the medium, analogously to shock waves-such as result from supersonic flight of bullets through air.
