The physical meaning implied in the gauge invariance of electrodynamics is analyzed using the Hamiltonian formalism (§ 2). The self-energy of the photon is calculated as a limit of diminishing the rest mass to zero of the self-energy of a neutral vector quantum with small rest mass (§ 3). The inevitability of introducing the method of renormalizing the light velocity as proposed in our previous paper is concluded from these results (§ 4).
