Spherically symmetric space-times play important roles in general relativity. In this note a theory is developed concerning the problem of determining whether or not a space-time defined by a line element arbitrarily given in any coordinate system is spherically symmetric, using the concept of characteristic system introduced by the present author. Then, as an example, the theory is applied to the space-times of Weyl and Levi-Civita, of Godel and of Silberstein.
