The sound absorption coefficient in the critical gases is studied theoretically by using the time-correlation function and expressing it in terms of the fluctuations of a set of physical variables with the aid of Mori's continued-fraction representation. In the van der Waals gas model the anomalous increase in the sound attenuation near the critical point is found to have the dependence of κ^<-4>, where k is proportional to the square root of the temperature difference from T_c.
