The validity of the usually adopted prescription for the ordering of the profile functions is discussed in the framework of the extended Glauber multiple-scattering theory which can describe inelastic excitations of the incident particles by nuclei. The essential condition is shown to be a≪R, where a is a characteristic range of the interactions and R is the nuclear radius. It is pointed out that since in this case phase functions cannot simply be defined it would not be suitable to state that the additivity of the phase function yields the composition law for the profile function.
