The Glauber theory of multiple scattering is extended to take account of the contribution from N^* as an intermediate state and is applied to the elastic scattering of a proton from He^4 at 1 GeV. The contribution arising from the inclusion of the N^* (1236) state to the total cross section amounts to about 4% and has a remarkable effect around the second maximum in the differential cross section.
