The influence of viscous forces on the gravitational and capillary instability of liquid cylinders carrying a uniform axial magnetic field is investigated. The stability of a cylinder of dielectric viscous liquid with an axial electric field is also studied. It is found that viscosity has a stabilizing influence as the magnetic fleld or the electric field has, but when the viscous force acts solely it only reduces the growth rates of the unstable modes without affecting the critical size of breakup of the cylinder. Further, as against the case of a field-free viscous cylinder, it is found that, in the presence of magnetic field, the critical size of breakup is increased with an increase in the gravitational (or the capillary) parameter and the extent of increase, however, decreases to zero in the limit of zero magnetic field.
