The integrated chiral (axial) U(1) anomaly is investigated within the framework of the Minkowski quantum field theory of the fermion field coupled to the background gauge field. The particle pictures for the asymptotic regions are defined in such a way that the S-matrix exists and is gauge invariant. For the 1+l-dimensional U(1) and the 3+1-dimensional SU(2) chiral gauge theories, it is exactly shown that there arises the violation of the fermion-number conservation which amounts to the topological charge of the background gauge field. On the same basis we also study the relation among the integrated chiral (axial) U(1) anomaly, the spectral flow of the time-dependent Dirac Hamiltonian and the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem.
