S-Matrix for Interacting Extended Boson Fields. I : Formalism

• We examine in some detail bilocal fields that were previously introduced as a possible heuristic description of hadrons. To develop the formalism we consider a ``φ^3'' vertex and construct a formally unitary S-matrix. The explicit form for the S-matrix to second order is obtained. The various Green's functions involved are discussed in some detail and some difficulties with covariance are removed.
