The Lagrangian formalism for a massive neutral spin 3 field is investigated without introducing an auxiliary field. The field variables are assumed a priori to be symmetric. By using the Takahashi-Umezawa method, the relativistic quantization is also carried out for this field. It is shown that both Lagrangian and field equations are parameter dependent. However, these parameters don't have any real physical significance as far as free field is concerned. In the presence of interaction, the Green's function is also parameter dependent. The determination of the parameters should be based on the high-energy behavior of the Green's function from experimental results.
