We have explored an effective interaction for the mean-field calculations from a semi-microscopic standpoint. The M3Y interaction, which is derived from the bare NN interaction via the G-matrix, has been modified so as to reproduce the saturation density, energy and the LS splittings. This semi-microscopic interaction is applicable to finite nuclei via the newly developed numerical method. It has been confirmed that this Yukawa interaction describes the properties of the symmetric nuclear matter reasonably well. For the stable and unstable oxygen isotopes, the present interaction has similar quality of agreement with the data to the Skyrme SLy4 interaction. However, there still remain ambiguities in several parameters. Further investigation will be necessary. The M3Y interaction has been successfully used in the reaction studies. We have here viewed that the modified M3Y interaction gives moderately good mean-field natures. It is hopeful that the work in this line may open a way to a unified description of various aspects of nuclear structures and reactions, both for stable and unstable nuclei.
