• This paper intend to revise ideas of tolerance in sixteenth century France. Discussions of tolerance have always caused confusion due to the fact that there has been no discernment between historical ideas, i.e., those used, in fact, in the early modern France, and analytical ones used by later writers and scholars. Furthermore, the latter have never been neutral. This paper, influenced by two previous studies, attempts to reconstruct the history of these ideas, starting with the analysises of "Clemence" and "Tolerance".
