• Effects of imidazole and benzimidazole on the light-induced proton uptake were investigated. Imidazole stimulated the initial rate and the steady-state of the light-induced proton uptake, but had no effect on the decay constant of proton efflux. Benzimidazole also stimulated the initial rate and the steady-state of the light-induced proton uptake. Benzimidazole enhanced the efflux of protons in the dark. These results suggest that benzimidazole may serve as an ionophore for proton and modulate the inner membrane charge of thylakoid.
