Color coding mechanisms were studied by recording horizontal cell responses of the carp retina. Responses to light stimuli modulated by a white noise signal were computer-analyzed to obtain the impules responses of four types of horizontal cells. The latencies of the S-potentials were classified in three discrete groups; (1) the hyperpolarizing responses of the L cell and those of the R/G, Y/B and R/Y/B cells to shorter wavelengths had a latency of about 30 msec, (2) the depolarizing responses of the three chromaticity type cells had a longer latency of about 50 msec and (3) the hyperpolarizing response of the R/Y/B cell to red stimulus had the longest latency of about 70 msec. A model of interactions between cones and horizontal cells is proposed to explain the results.
