Directional reflecting characteristic of surfaces of smoked MgO and BaSO_4 powder were measured with the consideration of polarization. An analysis was made on the directional reflection by applying the scattering theory. For the reflected radiation whose direction of polarization is crossed to that of the incident radiation, the experimental results were compared with the computed results by multiple scattering theory assuming the isotropic phase function. For the reflected radiation whose direction of polarization is parallel to that of the incident radiation, the experimental results were compared with the computed results by the Mie scattering theory taking account of size distribution of the small particles. The agreement between them were reasonably well in spite of the rough assumption made. Thus, the scattering is considered to be very important as one of the physical processes involved in the directional reflection of some white diffuser surfaces.
