Phenomena involving stagewise operations in chemical engineering are mathematically expressed in the difference equations by determining the material or heat balances around arbitrary stages or plates in the operations. If the expressions which result are linear difference equations, then their solutions are directly determined by the methods of calculus of matrices. In this paper, we applied matrices to the stagewise operations of absorptions, extractions, distillations, and fluidizations, and gave the general solutions of the various types of linear difference equations, calculating the unknown quantities on arbitrary i-th plate or stage and the number of plates or stages.
