The authors obtained a pure sample of elaidic acid by catalytic isomerization of oleic acid isolated from "Tsubaki" oil. The properties of potassium elaidate as a colloidal electrolyte were studied in comparison with those of alkali oleates by applying the methods of determining molecular conductivity, surface tension and viscosity of the solutions of these salts. The measurements were carried out at temperature of 60℃. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of potassium elaidate thus determined existed in the range of 0.01-0.013 mole/l, while that of potassium oleate in the range of 0.025-0.05 mole/l. The fact that CMC of the elaidate was found smaller than that of the oleate could be attributed to the more easy molecular orientation of the former salt, whose geometrical form had been considered as "trans" in the process of mrcelle formation. The results were found in accord with those of SCHULMAN and others who had compared the emulsifying powers of sodium elaidate and sodium oleate as emulsifying agents. (Received Februafy 5, 1953)
