The Hokushin General Hospital in a rural hospital located in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, Central Japan. About 3000 patients a month visit the outpatient clinic of the department of internal medicine, and 3.9% of them comprises the group of having so-called unidentified complaints.Of 105 patients who visited the hospital since May 1 through May 24,1973,63 were given diafnosis of vegetative dystonia; 23 neurosis; and 19 others.Of 82 patients (including 63 vegetative dystonia and 19 others) about three fourth of the cases were female, and the major part of them consisted of the age group of 40 to 50,which was followed by that of 30.Patients were undergone analysis of their complaints by Abe's modification of the Cornell Medical Index. Results were : 83% vegetative dystonic complaints (more than 11 in 43 quastions) and 60% neurotic complants (more than 11 in 51 quastions). The percentages of responses to the questions indicating the vegetative dystonia were : -Quastion No. 67…feel stiffness in the shoudler and around the neck : 87% Question No. 109…feel exhaustion after the work : 78% Question No. 108…be fagged out sometimes : 71% Question No. 37…cold limbs even at the summer : 76% Question No. 80…always feel depressed on account of headache : 71%, etc.As for the cause of the sickness, the author considers that it is due firstly to physical stress, particularly placed upon female labor force (so-called "agriculture dependent on mothers"), which characterizes Japanese agriculture, and secondly to decreasing psychic energy in these generations. Consequently, the therapeutic plan should not rely solely upon medicine, but be orientated to the improvement of efficiency in work and also of the mental health, i. e., salf-supporting mind, in the women farmers.
