A 28-year-old female case of conversion hysteria, showing a series of symptoms and signs simulating a number of diseases, was reported. The disease was nitiated by obstinate cough and sputum, presumably icaused by an accidental acute respiratory infection. Thereafter, cough persisted and often induced paroxysmal attacks of a series of symptoms and signs consisting of dyspnea, wheezing, palpitation, frequent urination and left-sided chest pain, all of which could be reproduced by loading a few minutes of hyperventilation test. In the process of psychotherapy, many problems in her personality structure and in the field of family dynamics were revealed. A psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy was successfully used as a single means of treatment. In this report, an analysis of the nature of the attack from the point of view of somatic symptomatology and of the psychodynamics underlying the occurrence of the disease was attempted.
