The urinary and sexual organs seem to be highly charged emotionally. Functions of the urogenital system are readily influenced by psychosomatic factors and many diseases in the field of urology may best be handled as psychosomatic diseases. The urinating function and sexual function in particular present important problems. The author studied the disturbance of urination and sexual impotence as psychosomatic diseases in the aged from a psychosomatic standpoint as the subject of this symposium. The pattern of urination changes with aging and the ability to urinate decreases especially above the age of 50,resulting in prolongation of the time of urination. This tendency was especially pronounced in patients with prostatic hypertrophy, and complained of as dysuria. Many patinets also exhibit various other psychosomatic symptoms such as apathy, melancholy, moodiness, consciousness of aging, leading to depressive moods. Actual examples showed that these psychosomatic symptoms disappeared and the pattern of urination improved after adequate treatmet. As to the sexual function, the 500 cases the author observed, are classified and the incidence according to age is presented. Psychosomatic impotence in aged patients in particular was studied. In addition to decrease in physiological function, the cause of impotence is anxiety concerning various diseases in the aged as well as social and domestic complaints. Besides psychotherapy, activation with androgen is effective. In the author's experience, the rate of improvement was as high as 62.3%.
