The cell lines from Antheraea eucalypti and from Aedes aegypti have been adapted to a medium without insect haemolymph. The medium which was formulated for the growth of tissuces from the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis, was not chemically defined and contained foetal calf serum instead of insect haemolymph. By mixing the original medium in which the cells had previously grown and the medium in which the cells were to be adapted, and by gradually reducing the ratio of the original medium to the medium to be adapted, the cells finally adapted to the insect haemolymph-free medium. The adapted sublines grew slower than the original lines, but original growth rates were recovered when the adapted sublines were cultivated in the original medium.
