The laboratory (L) strain of Dacus cucurbitae maintained on artificial diet for about 49 generations had a shorter pre-mating period than the wild (W) strain. Ovarian development of the L-strain was faster than that of the W-strain, which suggested a reduction in the pre-mating period of the L-strain. A positive correlation was found between the stage of ovarian development and the female receptivity to mate in the L-strain. The L-strain showed no considerable deviation from the W-strain in daily rhythms of feeding, locomotion, and preening activities. Courtship and copulation attempts were restricted ro dusk, irrespective of strain, but the L-strain initiated these sexual activities under higher light intensity then the W-strain.
