The interaction of Bombyx mori hemocytes eith goose erythrocytes (GRBCs) in relation to the larval development was first studied using a rosette assay. Hemocytes from this species are shown to be able to bind to GRBCs in vitro in the absence of hemolymph and divalent cations. The results show that the number of hemocytes binding to GRBCs and the frequency of GRBCs bound per hemocyte increased during the larval development. The percentage of GRBC-binding hemocytes reached a peak at the 5th instar. Hemocyte type involved in this cyto-adherence was mainly granular cells at the light microscope level. Neither opsonic nor hemagglutinating activity was detected in the hemolymph regarding the adherence of GRBCs by hemocytes. Thus, the increase in the number of both GRBC-binding hemocytes and one hemocyte-binding GRBCs will be due to the increase in the number of granular cells involved in the in vivo hemocytic reactions and to the presence of membrance receptors for GRBCs, with which they form spontaneous rosettes.
