Triploid males of Bombyx mori from tetraploid females crossed with diploid males were sterile. The chromosomes in such sterile males varied in number from 30 to 57,with average 39. In testes of triploid pupae, eupyrene sperm bundles were abnormal but apyrene sperm bundles appeared normal similar to those of diploid males. Females mated with diploid males contained both types of sperm but only apyrene sperm were found in spermathecae of females mated with triploid males. Such matings did not elicit the ovipositional response of normal females. On the basis of these findings, a relationship beteen the sterility of triploid males and the production of sperm dimorphism is discussed.
