It is generally assumed that Chinese society before the 1970s was a society without any social inequality, class structure, or social hierarchy. Since the socialist revolution in 1949,the Chinese government promoted and implemented various social and educational reforms in order to establish a new socialist country. However, contrary to widespread expectations and assumptions those reforms and policies created new social divisions and henceforth inequalities with regard to educational and social opportunities. These inequalities and social divisions have continued to exist until the present day and, from the author's view, while having been at the foundation of current economic and educational development, they have also become the sources of various social and educational problems for Chinese society. For this reason, this paper describes those social and educational reforms and policies implemented from the 1950s to the 1970s, and examines the nature and structure of new social divisions and hierarchies and their relation to educational opportunities.
