The purpose of this article is to understand "the early career development"-the first decade of one's career development-in organization in Japan, by reviewing theories and research studies relevant to this period. It is important to study on this period because this period corresponds to "young adulthood" in psychosocial development, and one experiences his/her transition from school to job during this period. However, there have been very few studies focusing on this period so far. In this article, three topics as follows are discussed. First, some features of Japanese personnel administrations were pointed out. Second, some developmental theories were briefly reviewed. Third, some research studies in Japan were also reviewed. In conclusion, I would like to stress the importance of this period from the psychological viewpoint and also discuss the future research directions.
