Anthropologists have long been interested in exchange relationships in Melanesia. Not only the Kula in the Trobriand Islands, the Moka in the Melpa and the Tee in the Enga, but also in almost every society in the New Guinea highlands, great ceremonial exchange can be observed. The exchange ralationship in Melanesia has a close relationship with the process of how the people achieve leadership; the status of a bigman. Every adult male in Melanesia has a chance to become a big man through exchange activities. He tries to get a socially high position through his network of exchange relationships. The aim of this paper is to make a preliminary report for an analysis of the exchange system in the lower Sepik area, Papua New Guinea, by describing an exchange system in the Buna language group, which has no bigman system, and by comparing it with the other system in the New Guinea area. The Buna language group is located in the lower Sepik area, around the Marienberg Catholic station. It consists of seven villages; Gavien, Mansep, Mosan, Mangan. Suk, Mambel and Bonam. Each village has a population of 30 to 200 people, and they get carbohydrate from sago palms as their main food. The people in the lower Sepik area had very early contact with Europeans and other foreigners. The catholic mission in Marienberg was founded in 1913 as the first station along the Sepik River. The war of 1941-45 and prolonged Japanese occupation had serious effects on these areas.
