This paper focuses on apology in Japanese, and attempts to study the following questions: (1)how native speakers of Japanese shift the way of apologizing depending on the addressee' s age, status, sex, and psychological distance from the speaker (2)what kind of semantic formulas are observed in a series of Japanese apologizing (3)how the textbooks of Japanese language deal with apology. Discourse Completion Test(DCT) was employed to collect the data for this research. It seems that native speakers of Japanese apologize in various ways in order to refrain from the destruction of the relationship between the apologizer and the recipient. The findings would have shed light on an area of pragmatics in Japanese apology.
