The historical development and present state of Intelligent Computer Assisted Language Learning (ICALL) are described. First, the somewhat confused situation regarding acronyms in the field of Computer Aided Learning is clarified. How ICALL should be defined is then regarded. Next, the development of the need for ICALL is looked at in relation to the programmed instruction, explicit learning, and communicative methods of language teaching. The difficulties encountered in natural language processing are considered before looking at Wenger's proposed four module architecture for ICALL systems. The problems involved in implementing the ideal system are stressed. Some actual systems are then briefly described and how they relate to the ideal system is assessed. Finally, the time lag between developments made in prototype systems and their commercial availability is illustrated.
