Recent advancements in the studies of heart failure have altered the perspective of this disease both in the pathophysiologic concepts and in the assessment of this disease. The purpose of this report is to offer a brief review of both conventional and recently developed methods of evaluating heart failure. The methods covered here include 1)functional assesments by echocardiography, radionuclide angiography, and by positron-emission tomography, 2)neuroendocrine approach using metaiodobenzylguanidine scintigraphy, and 3)molecular biological approach utilizing indium 111-monoclonal antimyosin antibody imaging.
