An analysis of 286 first-year students at Hokkai Gakuen University on their perceived needs regarding English as a Foreign Language was conducted. The questionnaire investigated three areas: 1) reasons for entering university, 2) objectives in learning English, and 3) desirability of proficiency in various English skills. Responses were analyzed for differences by gender and by major (American, British, and Canadian Studies; Japanese Studies; Non-humanities). Results indicate strong differences by major and gender, with implications for EEL curriculum development.
