Recent literature of Parkinson's disease treated with traditional Chinese medicine particularly using Kampo or Japanese herbal medicine was reviewed. Since 1967 when levodopa was first applied to a patient with Parkinson's disease and confirmed to be effective, levodopa and dopamine-related pharmaceutical product have been the major medicine in treating patients with Parkinson's disease. However, long-term levodopa therapy results in fluctuation of the effect of levodopa and other adverse effects such as dyskinesia and psychosis. Kampo or Japanese herbal medicine would help satisfying the needs of the alternative or additional products other than dopamine-related products. In addition, although levodopa supplement the deficiency of dopamine in the nigro-striatal pathway, it reported to damage the dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra eventually, therefore, drugs that prevent the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra are needed. Kampo medicine may have these kinds of effect if it is appropriately prescribed according to the state of each individuals or according to the stage of the Parkinson's disease.
